The Flying Burrito Brothers – The 1969 Jim Dickson Honky Tonk Demos Acetate

The Flying Burrito Brothers – The 1969 Jim Dickson Honky Tonk Demos Acetate

Produced by Jim Dickson at the « Sound Factory » in late 1969.

Chris Hillman, Michael Clarke, Gram Parsons, Sneaky Pete Kleinow and Bernie Leadon.

These rough tracks from the "Sound Factory" recordings were pressed on this acetate disc. More tracks were recorded that don’t appear here.

There is a continuous hum that I’ve only been partially able to remove.

Later, acoustic guitar and background vocals were added by Herb Pedersen and the finished re-worked tracks appeared on the “Honky Tonk Heaven” double LP in 1973.

1. Together Again (3:12)

2. Sing Me Back Home (3:49)

3. Crazy Arms (2:47)

4. Lodi (instrumental) (3:05)

The Byrds - Live at Dean Junior College 1972 - repost with updated audio files and artwork

This one has been posted already. As someone requested a repost, I took the opportunity to update the artwork, which was full of errors and omissions. I also updated the names of the audio files and the tags. The front cover has a picture of the wrong lineup (John Guerin shoud be there, not Gene Parsons). The booklet and back pictures are correct.

Don’t expect hi-fi – it’s a rather poor quality audience recording.

Gram Parsons – The Neon Bread Tape

Gram Parsons – The Neon Bread Tape

Studio, New York, NY

I received this one from a cyber friend. Hereunder is the original accompanying text. I guess TTD means “The Traders Den”, so that probably the original source. I have more than serious doubts about this being from the early 70s though. It lasts just under 2 hours and there are no tracks by either The International Submarine Band or The Byrds, The Flying Burrito Brothers or Gram’s solo LPs. My guess is that it’s from the mid-sixties.

Comments:

This comes from a reel that was given to me in the late 90's by the same source that gave me all of the 1970 Byrds shows and the Gene Clark rough mixes. The reel was labelled "Neon Bread", and the source told me that it was an undocumented Gram Parsons New York City studio session from the early 70's. Naturally, I was intrigued.

At most points of the reel there were different programs in the right and left channels...only occasionally did the two sides synch up. At some points one channel was forwards and the other channel backwards! Lots of fun!

Because of these issues, my CDR copy had gone uncirculated (and unplayed) for the past 20+ years. A few weeks ago I reached out to a friend and fellow TTD member to aid in the restoration of this ultra-rare gem. Thanks to his efforts, here it is!

And by the way, it isn't very good. Extremely rare, but not very good.

Enjoy !

Various Artists – Country Rock Festival – Philadelphia 1973

Various Artists – Country Rock Festival – Philadelphia 1973

Tower Theatre, Philadelphia – June 1973

"Warner Bros. Records" set up a mini-tour which was billed as a "country-rock festival" package. The all-day, all-night affair consisted of Gram Parsons, Emmylou Harris, Gene Parsons, Clarence White, Roland White, Eric White Jr., James Burton, some members of Country Gazette, Sneaky Pete Kleinow and Chris Ethridge - all of whom had signed record contracts with "Warner Bros". There were two test shows on the East Coast in June 1973, which got fantastic critics. One in Annapolis, Maryland and then another in Philadelphia (this concert).

Warner Brothers intended to extend it to a world tour, but the project collapsed due to Gram Parsons’ and Clarence White’s deaths.

This was the last known public performance given by Gram Parsons.

 Gram Parsons (guitar, vocals)

Clarence White (guitar, vocals)

Gene Parsons (drums, vocals)

Chris Ethridge (bass)

Sneaky Pete Kleinow (pedal steel guitar)

Emmylou Harris (guitar, vocals)

Roland White (guitar, mandolin, vocals)

Eric White Jr. (banjo, double bass, vocals)

Byron Berline (fiddle)

Alan Munde (banjo)

Roger Bush (bass)

James Burton (guitar)

Not all artists perform on all tracks.

Some sources say that the concert lasted approximately 3 hours! So this is just a 43 minutes excerpt, mostly focused on Gram Parsons.

 Don’t expect excellent audio quality!

There is a poor quality silent film with excerpts of the concert. Here’s a clip made by Thomas Aubrunner with music from the concert added.

The Roustabouts - Culver City 1967

The Roustabouts - Culver City 1967

Arena Room, Culver City – August 25, 1967

Important note: I have serious doubts about the date, place and artists. Although this is obviously Clarence playing, I hear no drummer, bass player, pedal steel player… Comments and info welcome.

One track only – excellent audio quality for a 1967 recording of a then-unknown band

Left to right on the front picture:

Denny Mathes (pedal steel guitar)
Bo Wagner (drums)
Richard Arlen (guitar, vocals) (leader)
Jim Alley (bass, vocals)
Clarence White (lead guitar)

From Thomas Aubrunner’s excellent Clarence White pages at:

http://www.burritobrother.com/reasons.htm

“Early in 1967, The Roustabouts were formed with singer-bassist Richard Arlen, Dennis Mathes on pedal steel guitar, drummer George Stevens and Clarence White.

Dennis Mathes recalls that Richard Arlen formed the band: "I joined the Roustabouts in early 1967 they had a gig at the "Arena Room" in Culver City. I was playing with Eddy Rae Prater in Inglewood when Richard Arlen offered me the job."

Richard Arlen had played with various club bands around the Los Angeles area, and travelled in the same circles as Clarence, who had immersed himself in the L.A. country clubs through 1966.”

Clarence White plays on a single released by Richard Arlen on the ION label in 1967 (ION 104)

Richard Arlen: I'm Tied Down To You / Keep Givin' In To You

Side A of the single appeared in 2003 on the Clarence White compilation CD “Tuff and Stringy: Sessions 1966-1968”.

Richard Arlen was mainly an actor who appeared in many movies.
