The 1972 edition also saw Poco performing just before The Byrds, playing on the Byrds P.A. and amplifiers as their own equipment had been destroyed by electrical shocks during rehearsals.

The End Is Near

It is with great sadness that I have to announce the end of the Rocking-Byrd and Rocking--Byrd blogs.

The ever-dropping amount of visitors, downloads and comments leave me no choice, as I just can't go on putting so much time and energy for just a handful of people. I feel sorry for the regulars, but so be it.

Two more concerts will be posted, on Mondays December 20 and 27, 2010.

No new post in 2011.

The blogs will stay up until January 30, 2011, so hurry up if there's something you want to download.

If you come across dead or broken links, please let me know so I can re-upload the files and update the links (that is, until January 30, 2011).

The blogs will be taken down on February 1, 2011.

Many thanks to all those who have supported the blogs during all these years.

Kentucky Colonels - Ash Grove Mid-Sixties (Tut Taylor Reel Tapes Archives #29)

The Kentucky Colonels – Tut Taylor Reel Tapes Archives #29

Ash Grove, Santa Monica, CA (mid 60s)

Clarence White - guitar
Roland White - mandolin
Scotty Stoneman - fiddle
Billy Ray Lathum – banjo
Roger Bush - bass
Leroy Mack – dobro

With guests Tut Taylor and The Spencers

The Tut Taylor Archive Reel #29 features a Kentucky Colonels live performance that was probably recorded at the Ash Grove, Santa Monica, CA, circa mid-1960s. Tut's recording does a nice job of capturing Clarence White's fine backing guitar. A nice treat is to hear the masterful fiddling of "Eight Time National Champion Fiddler" Scotty Stoneman, who is announced as a guest at this show. Some dobro is heard in the background on tracks 9-10, and may be Tut. "The Spencers" (Dave and Lou), a popular California country act in the 1960s, sing two songs (tracks 12-13) backed by the Colonels. This recording is notable for featuring a number of tunes not found on other circulating Kentucky Colonels shows.

1. Wound Time Can't Erase (0:22)
2. Each Season Changes You (3:18)
3. From A Jack To A King (4:40)

Gene Clark And The Firebyrds - The Rocking Horse Café, Hartford 1985

Gene Clark and The Firebyrds – Live At The Rocking Horse Café

The Rocking Horse Café, Hartford, Connecticut – January 13th, 1985

Gene Clark (guitar, harmonica, vocals)
Michael Clarke (drums)
Mike Hardwick (pedal steel guitar)
Paul Nigro (saxophone)
Jack Carchio (lead guitar)
Burt ??? (rhythm guitar)
Tom Reinhardt (?) (bass)

Al Bershaw writes:

« Gene and Mike were traveling on this 'tour' with a pedal steel player only. They were literally throwing together bands when possible by just partying with local musicians and 'winging' it, so to speak. On this date, I assisted them in putting together this band, and rehearsals were done in my basement.
Other personnel on this date were friends from various local bands that jumped at the chance to play with Gene. The Firebyrds on this gig were: Jack Carchio - lead electric guitar (from the band China Doll), Burt ???? - rhythm electric guitar (from Linda & The Loveletters), Tom ??? - bass (from Haiku), Paul Nigro - sax (from Mr Big - he was a very respected and talented Connecticut musician. Sadly, he committed suicide a week or two after this gig. This was his last public performance), Gene Clark - vocals & acoustic guitar, Mike Clarke - drums ».

This blog has had exactly 3 comments in the last 2 months (one of them being a reply by me to a visitor's comment). This isn't worth the trouble anymore. I will keep the main Rockingbyrd blog open for the time being, but this, the Rocking-Byrd mirror blog, will cease to be functional soon. Thanks to the very few visitors who bothered to write comments.
